Paddy Sweeney goes the distance for WA families with sick kids

30 Nov 1999

9News Perth Sports Director and Presenter Paddy Sweeney has become a familiar face in the world of Ride for Sick Kids WA (#RFSKWA). Since his first Ride in 2021, Paddy has not only witnessed the power of the event but has also become deeply connected to the cause it supports—Ronald McDonald House Charities WA (RMHC WA).

Paddy’s involvement with the annual fundraiser was inspired by his connection to the event through his employer, Nine Perth, RMHC WA’s Media Partner and dedicated supporter of RFSK WA.

Alongside him throughout the journey has been Nine Perth’s Managing Director, Clive Bingwa, and together they have become an integral part of the RFSK WA peloton.

It's an honour to be in a position to be able to assist those who need it, says Paddy.
Many of these families who stay at the House travel long distances from regional WA, and are away from their support networks, so to be close to the hospital during these challenges is crucial.

Riding over 100km a day over four days is no small feat. But for Paddy, the motivation to keep going comes from the powerful stories of those families who rely on RMHC WA.

The mind has a tendency to drift off and ponder when spending hours upon hours on the bike.
It's hearing, and sometimes meeting those impacted, which provides wonderful perspective to all our lives, and also great motivation to continue when things can become a little challenging.

After the 500km journey, the sight of families welcoming the Peloton back to Ronald McDonald House at QEII is an emotional and fulfilling experience.

To ride into the House with families cheering and supporting you, sporting beaming smiles is magical.

For those considering participating in RFSK WA 2025, Paddy has clear advice: "Do it. Don’t hesitate. You won’t regret it."

He emphasises that the event is not about competition or performance but an opportunity to form connections that last a lifetime all the while raising vital funds to support WA families when they need it most.

One of the great things about the Ride is egos are left at the door. It doesn’t matter if you’re a rider capable of competing in the Tour de France or someone who has simply dusted the cobwebs off the bike to take part.
The cause is the main reason, but so too are the people. Every year there are familiar faces, but new recruits also come on board - all with the common goal of trying to make a difference for those needing it.

And for those wondering whether the event will be a one-time commitment, he warns that it’s hard to resist the urge to return.

Once you ride once, you're a rider forever.
Ride for Sick Kids WA is so much more than a 500km challenge; it’s a transformative experience that unites people in support of WA families who rely on RMHC WA.

It's fun and for a formidable cause," he concludes, reminding us all that the real impact of the ride is felt long after the last pedal is turned.
